South Africa’s magnificent natural Place – Blyde River Canyon
Tuesday, May 25, 2010 9:29The Blyde River Canyon is a magnificent natural feature of South Africa located in Mpumalanga, and forming the northern part of the Darkensberg escarpment. Awe-inspiring views over the 33km long chasm provide some indication of the magnitude of this natural phenomenon. It is the third largest Canyon in the world and the only green Canyon on Earth.
The area is a popular South African hiking destination not only because of its breathtaking scenic beauty but also because of the wealth of biodiversity it supports. There are countless hiking-trails navigating the breathtaking nature around the canyon. The most popular hike is surely the Blyderiverspoort Hiking Trail which takes about five days and runs the length of the canyon. But can be split into shorter excursions from 3 days to 1 day, or even a half-day, to cater for all ages and fitness level. The trail takes in the canyon itself, waterfalls, lookout points and bridges. These hikes are particularly good for bird-watchers. There are spots along the trail offering abseiling and rock climbing for the more adventurous hiker.
Viewpoints are named for the spectacles they offer such as God’s window and Wonder view both of which provides wonderful views and fabulous opportunities for the camera.. One of the best panoramic vantage points is the “Three Rondavels”. Three hilltops that look like African round-huts which are called Rondavels. On nice days you can see the sparkling river deep down in the gorge and you will experience the breathtaking silence that hangs over the unique landscape.
The Blyde River Canyon supports large diversity of life, including numerous fish and antelope species as well as Hippos and Crocodiles and every primate species that can be seen in South Africa including Vervet monkeys and Samango monkeys. The diversity of birdlife is similarly high , including the beautiful and much sought Narina Trogon.
Where the Blyde River and the Treur River meet, water erosion has formed one of the most remarkable geological phenomena in the country ,known as the Bourkes Luck Potholes. Over thousand of years , surreal cylindrical rock sculptures , created by whirling water, have formed a series of dark pools which contrast artfully with the streaked white and yellow lichen covered rocks. The region is also famous for its countless spectacular waterfalls which are really worth a visit. Visitors can take pleasure in the exciting activities available along the Blyde River Canyon. Camp out and enjoy a fresh meal of trout, or jump into one of the many waterfall pools to cool off after an exhausting hike in the deep forest trails . It is also a popular White Water Rafting site and there are numerous operators providing day and overnight rafting expeditions.
Thus Blyde River Canyon holds a revelation of stunning scenery, great opportunities for seeing flora and fauna , plenty of time to enjoy the lush surroundings and great outdoor activities. Its close proximity to Kruger National park makes this a convenient post-safari scenic stopover.
