The “Wonder Cave” – Cradle of Humankind Johannesburg
Friday, February 19, 2010 8:55Discovered for the first time (on record) during 19th century, “The Cradle of Humankind” located about 50 kilometers northwest of Johannesburg, South Africa in the Gauteng province is a mesmerizing site, which gets carved on the memories for an indefinite time. The Cradle of Human Kind was acclaimed as a World Heritage Site, by UNESCO in 1999 and thus, was recognized throughout the world with the very interesting title “The Cradle of Humankind”. This interesting title, refers to the discovery, as a matter of fact, the first ever discovery of the “Ape Human” a 2.3-million year-old fossil, “The Australopithecus Africanus” that also evidences, somewhat a link in the chain of evolution. The site of the Cradle of Human Kind currently occupies 183 square miles (474 km²) of mesmerizing and awe-striking complex of limestone caves, including the Sterkfontein Caves, as well as the Wonder Cave.
What makes “The Wonder Cave” special is the inspiring rock and crystal formations in the cave, (my personal favorite being the one named “Praying Marry”). The Stalactite and stalagmite formations, the dark inside of the Wonder Cave, the scent in the air, the evidences preserved by the holy hand of nature itself, for us to see and get inspired, all the wonders collected in the Wonder cave give you a feel, a strange sense of the pre-historic age and the unique relation between human and nature, as you may have experienced never before.
The Wonder Cave, situated in the internationally renowned valley of Kromdraai, Gauteng, South Africa, is the third-largest cave chamber in the country (besides the other sites in the Cradle of Human Kind). Although, there is no exact calculation available but it is believed to be about 1.5 million years old. The single chamber of Wonder Cave occupies an area of 46000 square meters, and is 125 meters long and 154 meters wide. The cave has about 14 stalactite and stalagmite formations up to 15 meters high, 85% of which are still growing. The 60 meter deep cave is accessible to visitors by elevator, and is located within the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, in the Cradle of Humankind.
Apart from a dozen of magical attractions of its own, the Wonder Cave is also a beginning of adventure and discovery as it lies amidst many countable & famous archaeological and palaentological sites containing the oldest recorded human remains. The inside of the cave is amicably decorated with rock and crystal formations dating back millions of years. The safety precautions are well taken care of, the cave is cleared of any harmful or deadly animals (please take advice from guides / hourly tours available) and competent guides, well informed with the history take you along with well-lit pathways. Contentedly, no crawling is necessary.
The Wonder Cave provides a magnificent experience! Once in a lifetime chance to see amazing Stalactites and Stalagmites that have been forming for billions of years, and remains of pre-historic humans. Once you in the splendid yet, enigmatic wonders of the cave, walking around and seeing what nature has done for many many years is incredible.
