A history analysis of city of Perth, Australia
Thursday, January 28, 2010 6:26The ideal, lively and gorgeous city of Perth is named after the birthplace of Sir George Murray (Perthshire Scotland) who was British Secretary of State for the Colonies when the city was founded in 1829. It was the intricate year of 1829 when British, motivated by the expected French establishments in the region of Western Australia laid the foundations of the city today called “Perth”. The crown of this triumph goes to Captain James Stirling (1791-1865), being the first to believe that the area will be an ideal location for a settlement during his visit to the region through Swan River in 1827. He persuaded the British government to found a colony there, independent of the colony in New South Wales.
However this colony was not to be manned by convicts. Instead the government would sell land cheaply to private citizens. The European Settlers, by selling the land to any foreign settlers or private citizens flamed a conflict between the European settlers and the Aborigines. Quite like the red-Indians or the conflicts in the African regions during slave trade, the indigenous people were driven off their land and many of them were killed. The conflict culminated in the Battle of Pinjarra.
From the pages of History, it is evident that the first ship to arrive in the Swan River Estuary was “HMS Challenger” captained by a Brit Charles Fremantle (1800-1869). Mr. Fremantle claimed the whole of Australia outside New South Wales for Britain! Stirling arrived in June. He ran the new colony by the Swan River from 1829 to 1832 and from 1834 to 1838. Perth itself was founded on 12 August 1829 and to mark this extravagant event a tree was cut down on the site of Kings Park.
It was during the 19th century when the amenities in Perth improved. In 1856 Perth was given the status of a city. The same year Perth gained street lighting as the first step towards becoming the illuminated and gorgeous Perth we see today. Meanwhile Supreme Court Gardens were laid out in 1845. A park was laid out in 1872. In 1901 it was renamed Kings Park. Queens Gardens were laid out in 1899. Meanwhile a number of prominent buildings were erected in Perth. The Old Mill dates from 1835. The Old Court House was built in 1836. The Town Hall followed in 1870 and St George’s Cathedral was built in 1888. Furthermore Perth Zoo opened in 1898. During the gold rush in 1892 in Western Australia, population of Perth boomed. At the end of the 19th century Perth gained an electricity supply and in 1899 electric trams began running in the streets. However the last trams in Perth ran in 1958. Perth Mint was established in 1899 and the garnishing of this fabulous city continued making it a matchless splendor to date.
In the late 20th century many prominent buildings were erected in Perth. Those included AMP Building, which was erected in 1976 and Bank West Building which was built in 1988. Exchange Plaza was built in 1992. The University of Western Australia was founded in 1911. Perth Concert Hall was built in 1971. Allan Green Conservatory opened in 1979. Mardalup Park was laid out in 1997. Meanwhile in the late 20th century a number of new buildings were erected in Perth including the AMP Tower in 1976, Governor Stirling Tower in 1978, Bank West Tower in 1988 and both Central Park and Exchange Plaza in 1992. Today the population of Perth is 1.47 million.
