Air Travel in and around Zimbabwe
Friday, April 16, 2010 3:50Zimbabwe has a significant role in African Continent. Although its not on the top list of African Tourism, yet its importance is more concentrated on its Geographical location and borders with some of the world’s famous and most visited destinations, including the natural wonder Victoria Falls. Firstly the flights from round the world, and from UK Gatwick Airport to Harare (Capital: Zimbabwe) are easily available at cheap fares as a wide variety of airlines fly to Zimbabwe. The famous and the cheapest fares are offered by Air Afriqiyah, Kenyan Airline, KLM, Air France and lastly, with the direct flights of Air Zimbabwe.
The land locked country has the biggest advantage of the borders and provides a good opportunity for cheap flights to many other neighbors through connections at cheaper fares. There are internal flights between Harare and Bulawayo, Hwange, Kariba and Victoria Falls, operated by Air Zimbabwe.
From Bulawayo as well, the flights to Victoria Falls are either at the same or cheaper fares than from Harare. Other flights, operated by Air Zimbabwe that connects the country’s prominent cities fly between Hwange and Harare, Kariba and Victoria Falls. From Kariba as well, you can easily fly between Harare, Hwange and Victoria Falls. Vice versa, there are internal flights also between Victoria Falls, Bulawayo, Hwange, Harare and Kariba.
For those who prefer to take a closer look and enjoy land journeys, buses and minibuses run between all major cities and towns (though you have to be watchful of the schedule).
As far as private hires and taxi is concerned, one must discuss the fare before taking a taxi to avoid any unpleasant arguments.
Also, my personal favorite way of seeing Zimbabwe is by train as the country has one of the best rail networks between:
- Harare, Gweru, Bulawayo, Hwange, Victoria Falls.
- Harare, Macheke, Mutare.
- Harare, Masvingo, Beitbridge.
- Harare, Chinoyi.
Also there are Boat services on Lake Kariba that operate between Kariba to Mlibizi, Chalala, Sengwa, Binga, Gache, Kings Camp, Tashinga and Bumi Hills.
Despite the wide range of indirect international flights to Zimbabwe, the biggest supplier of direct flights with competitive fares remains Air Zimbabwe, the flag ship carrier of Zimbabwe. The airline, though has been largely effected to rumors but in reality holds no case of plane crash or mismanagement since the independence of Zimbabwe, which is a big deal for any carrier to achieve!
